My Personal Research Journey
I have chosen to research and look up information related to young children and the effects of poverty. I strongly feel that researching this subject matter will benefit the students, families as well as myself on a professional level because I will gain better insight, compassion and empathy for most of the families I work with on a daily basis. This will also help me become a better person and educator as I learn to build better healthy relationships with children, parents, professionals and colleagues. I would love to hear from other colleagues who may have done similar research in the past or who may have some insightful stories to share that is related to young children and the struggles, issues and concerns of poverty.
Christine,
ReplyDeleteI know in my last class we did a section on Poverty. There are many children in my county that are suffereing with issues of poverty. I know there are some programs or non-profits that offer help such as food, clothing, etc., but with the economy being so bad it is hard to help everyone on need. The county that I work for offers parents help with resources, food, clothing, etc. We as early childhood professionals have to be up to date with programs or services that can help families that my need it.
Christine,
ReplyDeletePoverty effects so many in so many different ways. Often it is very hard to educate young children living in these situations because we must first deal with their reality whether it be sleep deprivation, hunger etc. However, once we are able to deal with these issues we are able to educate our young children. It is so hard to see children and their families in such conditions that is why it takes special people with the heart to be of help to work in the early childhood field. Any resources that I may come across to help you with this topic I will be sure to pass it along.
Hello Christine, as Lori mentionned we did obtain many resources in our last class in regards to poverty and many other issues that affect children's development. As our country's economy is effected many of our low income middle class children are being affected without many times even knowing it. Hunger is one of the most common effects due to poverty. We need more resources such as food pantries available to feed all the children and families suffering from hunger today.
ReplyDeleteIn the area that I work in, which is West Chicago,we have many resources that provide food and clothing. We have local churches, and Peoples Resources, which is the largest food assistance program and pantry in the northern Illinois region. They have a free clothes closet, provide mortgage help and rent assistance, and also offer homeless prevention services so that people in need do not lose their housing.
I will see what other resources I come across that might be of help.
I have to agree about the knowledge you will gain. Growing up I did a lot of missionary trips with my dad to Mexico. I remember looking at these children my age and young and not understanding why they couldnt have what I have. My dad finally sat down with my sisters and I and explained some children were not as fortunate. I remember feeling sad and upset that they couldnt have what I had. I was young when I got this experience, but I believe that every child should get this understanding. I fear that children these days receive it all and never know what it is like for other children who do not have that opportunity.
