For this assignment, I chose to watch a show called “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” this is a show that I would not normally watch but chose it because I hear a lot about it and it appears to be very popular.  Watching the show with no sound was actually quite entertaining because that family was all over the place.  They had so many different things going on that I enjoyed figuring out what they were saying and meaning with their body language.   They are a very affectionate family so they were very touchy feely.  They use an enormous amount of facial and hand gestures.  They also use eye contact a lot as well.  When I watched the show again with sound I was surprised that I was pretty much dead on with their discussions and remarks just off of body language. I could tell when they were angry, arguing, happy sad, confused, and etc.  I could tell when they were having serious conversations or being sarcastic with each other.  They are very hands on and allow a lot of room for play in their theory and ideas.  I enjoyed the show will probably continue to watch it.

  1. Hi Christine,
Watching a show with no sound and trying to figure out what the characters were doing was really entertaining to me too! I had some trouble following the plot and was surprised when I turned the sound on and saw what was actually happening...some of my assumptions were pretty far off!
I agree with you, it is easier to figure out a message when a person has effective body language. Facial expressions really helped me figure out the emotions that the characters had too. Unlike you, I missed most of the sarcasm and humor when I watched the show the first time. However, I think that focusing on the nonverbal cues the first time helped me pick up on some things that I might have normally missed when I watched it again.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!

  2. Christine,
I believe that you chose the right show for this assignment .You did a good job guessing what the episode was about with the sound off. I do watch this show often and I agree with you that they used a lots of their non verbal expressions like smiles and eye contacts. Great Post Christine.

  3. Christine,
Isn't it amazing how when you can not hear what someone is saying how you could miss the substance of what they are saying. I got most of the show I watched but as far as the substance, I was off big time. It is almost like talking a foreign language. I can understand more clearly how deaf people may be feeling.
