Just the past weekend my daughter experienced racism. She was invited to birthday party of a friend that is a different race from hers.I always tell my children treat everyone the same no matter what race they are.My daughter had been excited about the party from the day she recieved the invitation.
She went to the party but she was the only young lady there of here race which that didnot matter to my daughter because she went because there and the party girl was friend. While she was sitting alone waitng to see the young lady that was having the party to young ladies passed the table where she was sitting and as they passed she said one of them made a racist remark about her.My daughter got very upset because she was shocked to see racism still exist.
Racism in Brazil
To be brazilian has always been believed to mean more than mere nationality.Breazilians like to define themselves as a real race.Brazilian is a mixture of the races such as african, indian, and white. The most completed scientific journalistics study about racism in brazil was conducted last year.89% of brazilians said they believe there is racismin their society and 10% they were prejudiced.
Unfortunately racism still rears it's ugly head far too often. My children were the minority when the attended the school I taught at. They are all very sensitive and tolerant of all. They are colorblind so to speak. Unfortunately, when my son hit 5th grade, he began experiencing racism. He was referred to as "smart white boy" then it was just "whitey" and then physical violence began. This created high anxiety levels for him and he did not want to go to school. It was very hard for him to get his little mind around the fact that his "friends" had turned on him because of his skin color. It was shocking for my son too! Racism=ignorance. I am a firm believer in the importance of celebrating diversity. Both at home and in my classroom, I go above and beyond to do so in hopes of fostering happy, healthy, confident, accepting, kind children :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know what it feels like firsthand but I think adults and children discriminate against others who are just different than they are. One example was found in the study in the video of the preschool children who were given red shirts and then gave some of the children the same color shirt. The children who wore the red shirts wanted to be friends with the children who also wore their same color shirt. They actually treated the other children as though they didn't like them based on shirt color. This I found very interesting.
ReplyDeleteMost parents should be blame for this . Children are innocent but they are taught to be racist by their parents. Children should be taught to accept every one for who they are and should not judge based on colors.Racism is everywhere.
